Workshop Conflict prevention: the Safewards model

In September, the next in a series of workshops for direct care workers in the psychiatric care units participating in the project will take place. This time it will focus on building a positive atmosphere and safe environment on the ward. Participants will learn specifically about the Safewards model, which focuses primarily on conflict prevention and reducing control. It is a sophisticated model based on research findings that offers concrete tools and practices and works especially with the attitude of the staff.

„Safewards is focused on understanding and reducing Conflict and Containment on wards and so make them safer for everyone,“ summarises the idea and objectives of the model by lecturer Geoff Brennan.

For more information on the Safewards model itself and individual interventions, see the section Inspiration for Change of the website.

The workshop will take place on 12-13 September 2022 in Prague under the guidance of Irish lecturer Geoff Brennan, who has been working in the field of mental health care as a nurse for more than thirty-five years. He has worked on several wards and has held various positions from nursing assistant, to station and head nurse, lecturer and researcher. In 2013 he was involved in research with Professor Len Boweser on the use of the Safewards model and has been actively involved in its dissemination and implementation.
