INSPIRATION FOR CHANGE
Our project included a space for inspiration, education, collecting experience and suggestions, which we used to implement concrete changes and fulfil its goals, i.e. strengthening a supportive and safe environment and preventing and managing conflicts in psychiatric care wards. On this page you will find various sources of inspiration that we have used and that may serve you as well. To give you an idea of how to use the inspiration and at which levels it is appropriate to work to achieve change, we also provide a change strategy here.
Safewards model
We were very inspired by the Safewards model, which offers concrete inteventions and tools to build an atmosphere of safety and reduce control on the wards, thus making a significant contribution to conflict prevention.
Open Dialogue approach
During our internships abroad in Norway, we learned about the use of the Open Dialogue approach to ward treatment planning. Involving patients and their family members and loved ones, who have an equal status and participate in the development of the plan in close collaboration with the professionals on the ward, contributes to a good course of treatment and the prevention of conflicts.
WHO QualityRights tool kit
Another important source of inspiration is the WHO QualityRights tool kit, in which the World Health Organization provides practical information and tools for assessing and improving quality and human rights standards in mental health and social care facilities.
Change strategy
The practice of using restraints is a complex and multilevel phenomenon. Any systematic change effort should take this into account. At the same time, no project can equally cover all relevant factors that influence the practice of restraint use.
In our project, we are considering working on multiple levels and defining a change strategy. This focuses primarily on the actors in direct care – their attitudes, awareness and skills. These are intended to produce concrete plans for practice change, which may include changes to ward regimes, rules and practices. However, for change to be possible, the management level of the healthcare facility is also involved. Because of the need to evaluate the effect, the development of uniform rules for monitoring the occurrence of restrictions is also included in the project.
